What awaits traditional retail during year-end purchases in Mexico?

A few months ago, when the quarantine and the closure of stores began in Mexico due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Association of Supermarkets and Department Stores (ANTAD) made the first adjustments to its growth projections for this year. According to Vicente Yáñez, president of the Association, the annual growth projection for traditional retail was not very favorable, with 3% for equal stores and 6.8% for total stores; however, the projection had to be adjusted due to the distancing measures, which caused total growth to same stores in March to be 1.1%, well below expectations.

A little over a year after the beginning of the pandemic worldwide, the change in consumer habits is evident; However, in our country the end of the year has brought with it a possible recovery in sales, since, according to a study published by Teads, the Global Media Platform, 93% of Mexicans have declared that they will celebrate the Christmas this year; while 89% declared that they will make Christmas purchases and gifts.

Proof of the enthusiasm of Mexican consumers this holiday season are the results of the Good End 2020. After twelve days of offers “The Good End closed with good numbers in general, which indicates that most likely, and Concanaco will confirm it in the next date, there were better sales than the Good End of the ninth edition of 2019 ”, According to Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, main representative of Profeco.

It is important to note that, despite the restrictions and security measures, purchases during this first stage of the end of the year were divided into 53% in person and 47% online, which means that many retailers gained online buyers, and they ensure that the influx in physical stores was constant.

Given these numbers, there are great expectations for Christmas sales; According to the leader of Concanaco, José Manuel López Campos, many businessmen feel optimistic at the close and are confident that they will reach their sales goals.
