Results of the 2019 shopping season: will this 2020 be very different?

This will be the longest shopping season ever, as part of the government’s strategy to reactivate the economy in the country. What can we expect for the sector retail at the end of the year, taking into account all the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought in consumer habits?

According to figures from the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism (Concanaco Servytur), during the end of the year 2019 there was an economic spill of 503.5 billion pesos; The stores increased their transactions in different percentages, many of them between 50% and up to 100%, the most popular being the categories of clothing, footwear, electronics, furniture, appliances, interior decoration, jewelry and food.

For its part, the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD) reported annual sales growth in 2019 of 7.7% to total stores, and 3.4% to equal stores. Of this total, the sectors that represented the highest percentage of sales were: supermarket (41.5%), general merchandise (39.9%), as well as clothing and footwear (18.6%).

In a recent publication, Deloitte reports that the most notable change in consumer habits left by the crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, was the increase in the purchase of basic and health products, and the decrease in that of products. non-essential. Due to this, for April of this year, ANTAD showed a general decrease linked to the closure of department stores; however, the self-service store channel registered a nominal increase in sales of 11.3%.

According to Deloitte estimates, we are currently experiencing on the road to stabilization, and forecast an increase in consumption in this last month; expecting a recovery period for the second quarter of next year.
